Grand Jury Basics

What is a Grand Jury?

A grand jury is a legal body of laypeople who determine if there is enough evidence to formally charge someone with a felony.

When is a Grand Jury Used?

Grand juries are used when prosecutors believe a criminal offense has been committed but need more information before indicting the suspect with a felony.

Grand Jury Process

After an investigation, prosecutors may present evidence to a grand jury. The grand jury can indict if it believes there is sufficient evidence that a crime has been committed. After an indictment, the charged suspect will attend an arraignment to hear the charges against them.
