Mets slugger Edwin Diaz expected to miss at least three days with a right intercostal strain

Mets closer Edwin Diaz is expected to miss at least three days with a right intercostal strain, manager Buck Showalter said Friday.

Diaz exited Thursday's game against the Nationals after just nine pitches with what the team initially called right side discomfort.

Showalter said the Mets are hopeful Diaz can return to the team before the end of the regular season, but he will likely miss the team's next three games at a minimum.

Diaz has been one of the Mets' most reliable relievers this season

Diaz has been one of the Mets' most reliable relievers this season, posting a 1.39 ERA and 32 saves in 55 appearances.

The Mets are currently in a tight race for the NL East title, and Diaz's absence will be a significant blow to the team's bullpen.

With Diaz out, the Mets will likely turn to closer-by-committee, with Seth Lugo and Trevor May the likely candidates to fill the ninth-inning role.
